That's certainly true, and Waters unintentionally proves the point. He goes overboard with preachy metaphors on "Oceans Apart," referencing (among other things) drone attacks, burning books and the death penalty like he's running through a checklist of outrage. Roger Waters was the main lyricist for the classic British rock band Pink Floyd. The title track is supposed to be a call to arms, but it's hard to be riled by his crotchety criticism of reality TV and the cliched image of people in power getting fat "on caviar in fancy bars." George Roger Waters (born 6 September 1943 in Great Bookham, Surrey, United Kingdom) is an English musician, singer-songwriter and composer. "Mistress Liberty, how we abandoned thee," Waters sings on "Broken Bones," a rhyme scheme more apt for a suddenly socially aware, first-time poet, not a seasoned rock legend. As a vocalist, Waters aspires for weariness or anger, but it tends to come across as disinterested or strained, and some half-hearted lyrics and cheap cynicism do him no favors. Godrich wisely balances those effects with modest arrangements that anchor many of the tracks, like the mild jazz drum beat on "The Last Refugee," the sparse piano on "The Most Beautiful Girl" and the simple acoustic guitar strum on "Deja Vu." In some ways, Godrich may have been too reserved: Lucius, the singer-songwriter duo of Jessica Wolfe and Holly Proctor, are underutilized as backing vocalists.
